How this calculator splits rent
Rent pays for two kinds of space. The shared space, the kitchen, living room and hallway, is used by everyone the same, so that part of the rent is split equally per person. The bedrooms are not the same, so the rest is split by size: a room twice as big pays twice as much of that part.
Extras count as extra size. A room with its own bathroom is counted 15% bigger, a balcony 10%. If two people share a room, they share its rent, and each pays a full share of the common space and the bills.
How much of the rent is the shared space?
There is no single right answer, which is why it is a slider. Most flats settle between 30% and 50%. If the living room is big and everyone uses it, go higher; if it is mostly bedrooms, go lower. The point is that everyone agrees on the rule before anyone picks a room.
Shared bills
Wi-Fi, electricity, the cook or the cleaner are split equally per person, since nobody uses the Wi-Fi by the square foot. Add them in the bills box and they are included in each room's total.
